D23 2019 was a big year for those who rely a lot on the content that Disney offer. As their demand has increasingly grown for the past year it was only a matter of time that they would release their own streaming service called DisneyPlus.

During the next three day, they offered a lot of insight through the Disney’s planned releases and mostly it was for the platform and Marvel Studios.

This streaming-services from Disney is set to be in line with Netflix, Amazon Prime Videos as a competitor. It’ll be available in the US, Canada, and the Netherlands on November 12. November 19  for Australia and New Zealand. It’s slated to be available in Europe October 2020 between 6 months to 1 year. Latin America will have it also in October 2020. The Asia Pacific will have it in October and 2 years ahead.

For the U.S the cost will be $7 a month to $70 a year. It will be available for 4K streaming. You can also pay $140 for a three-year subscription. Disney also has promised wide device support for Phones, Tablets, Computers, TV and Media boxes for Streaming. That also includes Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

The service will, of course, include everything connected to the Disney Brand; Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars and National Geographic. That means 30 seasons of The Simpsons from day one and other titles. A Home Alone reboot is also in works.

FEATURE FILMS 

Black Panther II

Director and co-writer Ryan Coogler finally announced on D23 when the second movie of Black Panther II will be released – May 6, 2022. Not much about the movie has been revealed yet like the title, the villain or a description of the plot. In this sequel Chadwick Boseman is returning as the title role, Martin Freeman will join him as well.

Black Widow

Natasha Romanoff, Scarlett Johansson’s iconic character for the MCU will get her own movie called Black Widow, which seemingly will have David Harbour and Florence Pugh to join her. Black Widow will be released 1 May 2020.

Cruella

Disneys Cruella De Vil

The production for the upcoming live-action movie about the 101 Dalmatians, starring Emma Stone has just started. Cruella is going to have a punk–rock style to these characters with some inspirations from the 1970s. The movie is planning to open up in May 28, 2021.

Frozen 2

Frozen II (2019)

After 6 years, the sequel to the global-hit smash animated musical called Frozen is on the way. Directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck attended the D23 Expo where they revealed that the second film will explore and answer a question like:

Why does Elsa have powers? Why was Anna born the way that she was? They also wondered about Elsa and Anna’s parents. Where were they really going when their ship went down? 

The main cast from the first movies is expected to return. Evan Rachel Wood is set to play Queen Iduna, Anna and Elsa’s mother. She will also sing in a flashback as well. The two movies are about to complete one story.

Frozen II has premiere in November 22, 2019. 

Jungle Cruise II

Dwayne Johnson entered the stage to officially announce the sequel of Jungle Cruise, a role that he shares the screen with Emily Blunt who in December played the role in Mary Poppins Returns (2018)

“We wanted to make a movie that was big, that was epic, that had romance, big comedy, big action, but—most importantly—it’s got me,” Johnson said.

Later on Johnson said:

“We are keenly aware of the responsibility we have for such a beloved property, and that property is Jungle Cruise, the ride. He also promised the fans while on stage that he will give them “the adventure of a lifetime.”

The movie is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and the sequel arrives in theaters July 24, 2020.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

Maleficent 2 (2019)

The Norweigan director, Joachim Rønning, of Pirates of Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017), helms the role in this anticipated sequel of the movie that was released 5 years ago. Angelina Jolie returns as the title character and with her she has Michelle Pfeiffer,  Ed Skrein and Elle Fanning as Aurora. The movie is set to be released in October worldwide.

Mulan

Mulan is the live-action film that is based on Disney own movie with the same name.

“What drew me to this project was Mulan herself. Her journey from village girl to male soldier to warrior to hero, I think represents all of us. And the story is as relevant and inspiring today as it was when it was first written over 1,500 years ago,” said Niki Caro, director of Mulan

 

As the plot goes,  it promises to be big action sequences, awesome costumes and it takes place in China. This movie stars Yifei Liu, Donnie Yen, Jet Li and premieres March 25, 2020.

Onward 

Pixar Onward (2020)

The Film’s director Dan Scanlon shared at the D23 event that the plot is taking inspiration from Scanlon and his brother’s youth. 

“My brother and I lost our father at a young age, and I’ve always wondered who my dad was and how I was like him. Those questions became a roadmap for this film,” explained the director. 

Tom Holland and Chris Pratt will star as two teenage elf brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot, who goes out on an adventure to see if there still is some magic in the world. Both actors joined Scanlon at the stage to much applause. Holland joked

“The last time we were here we were like ‘space buddies,’ fighting on Titan, and now we’re ‘elf buddies’ fighting in L.A.,”

The audience got to watch an eight-minute clip from the film and also received an exclusive poster. The film has premiere on March 6, 2020.

Raya and the Last Dragon

Not much is known about this movie expects for its genre of Animation, Adventure, Comedy. As Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins is the director, the only casted member is Cassie Steele and Awkwafina so far.  The plot was also released during the D23 Expo:

The film tells the story of Raya, a lone warrior from the fantasy kingdom of Kumandra, who teams up with a crew of misfits in her quest to find the Last Dragon and bring light and unity back to their world. 

The animated adventure comes to the theaters on November 25, 2020.

Soul 

It’s announced that Inside Out director Pete Docter will direct Disney’s upcoming film Soul. A movie that travels through the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms of space and “The You Seminar” – the place where you can discover your unique personality. According to Docter, the film will ask the ultimate philosophical questions such as Why am I here? Where did I come from? What am I here for?

Dana Murray is the film’s producer, Kemp Powers is the co-director/writer and Mike Jones is the writer. They all joined Docter on the D23 stage to announce the film and tease the plot. 

Jamie Foxx will star as Joe Gardner, the middle-school band teacher with a passion for jazz, who accidentally meet 22-year-old Tina Fey, a soul-in-training, on his way to the “The You Seminar.”

Star Wars IX: The Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars - The Rise of Skywalker

With J.J Abrams returning as the director, Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker and as it’ll have a conclusion to the Star Wars as we know it. It marks also a definitive end for this epic franchise after 40 years.

The cast that we’ll see in December this year includes; Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Daniels, Joonas Suotamo, Kelly Marie Tran, Billy Dee Williams together with Naomi Ackie and Keri Russell.

“We have genuinely become a family over these last few years. We’re done making these movies, and it’s crazy to think in a few short months The Rise of Skywalker will be in theaters. We had the best time,” said Rey herself, Daisy Ridley.

With Billy Dee Williams Lando Calrissian returning just like Palpatine it can only be epic.

Williams also shared his feeling to return to the Millennium Falcon:

“Lando has never left me, and being here all these years, these 40 years, is a very special experience for me.” 

 The droid will also return in its own glory.

J.J Abrams took a chance as well to speak up at the D23 Expo.

“The character of Leia is the heart of the story,” said Abrams.

This would suggest that a lot of things would be about her character Leia Organa, the last Skywalker alive besides Kylo Ren. The final movie hits the theater in the middle of December this year and expects to create some ground-breaking record on the Box-Office.

The Eternals

You can almost tell from the size of the ensemble that Marvel Studios aims high for this movie. It’s supposed to be in line with The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy. 

Kevin Feige hinted on stage before he announces the cast:

“We’ve pulled back the cosmic curtain on the MCU in ways you can’t imagine,” 

The announced actors on stage were; Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari also the first deaf hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as leader Ajak, Lia McHug as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh and Angelina Jolie as warrior Thena.

The additional cast is Gemma Chan as Sersi, Barry Keoghan as Druig and Kit Harington is playing Black Knight Dane Whitman.  Chloé Zhao is the director and the released that is set to November 6, 2020

DISNEY PLUS

Lady and the Tramp

Lady and the Tramp (2019)

In 1955, Lady and the Tramp were released in a classic Disney-animated form. And this it will be a mix between CGI and live-action storytelling. Voice-actors includes Tessa Thompson, Sam Elliott, and Justin Theroux.

This retelling of the classic is expected to be available for streaming on DisneyPlus in November.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Marvel President Kevin Feige had a few announcements about the upcoming Falcon and Bucky Barnes focussed series. The cast was expanding, Emily Vancamp returns as SHIELD Agent Sharon Carter and Wyatt Russell makes MCU debut as U.S agent John Walker. 

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will stream on Disney Plus in fall 2020, and will be the first new Marvel series on the platform. 

Cassian Andor

The shooting schedule for this Rogue One prequel series is set to start next year, 2020.  Nothing more was announced at the D23 event, the release date and name of the series is still not known for the public. The actors gave though playful hints. 

“I’m thinking K-2Fast, K-2Furious: A Cassian Andor Story,” said Alan Tudyk, the actor behind Star Wars droid K-2SO. 

In this prequel-series based on Rouge One, Diego Luna returns as Cassian Andor.

Monsters at Work

Monsters At Work (2020-)

A spin-off series of the Monsters Inc. movie and it will take place after the film’s timeline. Even though it will take place in the same universe, the show will have a new group of characters. The main will be Tylor who is a new graduate from Monsters’ University, who unfortunately starts his first day at Monsters Inc. when they switch from scream technology to laugh technology. 

Even though the series is a spin-off,  it will have Billy Crystal and John Goodman back as their iconic characters from the film.

An upcoming show to Marvel’s MCU, and it will be about a Jewish mercenary named Mark Spectre left for dead in Egypt.

The film is one of the movies who have been announced at D23 to come to the MCU. It’s about Kamala Khan, the first Muslim superhero in her own TV series. A Pakistani American girl born into a religious family and fights crime in her native New Jersey, U.S.A. 

She-Hulk

Bruce Banner’s cousin Jennifer Walters will join Marvel’s MCU with her own upcoming series. Also a lawyer by practice, fans of the hulk will get follow her to fighting crime and struggle with her powers. 

Noelle

One of Disney’s upcoming movies that have a trailer out at the moment is the Christmas themed comedy Noelle, which will star actress Anna Kendrick and actors Bill Hader and Billy Eichner. The film’s release will be November 12th on Disney+

Obi-Wan Kenobi TV-Series

It’s confirmed that actor Ewan McGregor, who previously played Obi-Wan in the Star Wars prequels, will return as the Jedi-master in an upcoming series where he will be the mainland.

“Yes. I am playing Obi-Wan Kenobi […]” answered McGregor when asked by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy at the event. 

It’s also confirmed that the scripts are written and shooting will begin next year.

 The Mandalorian

Disney’s upcoming Star Wars TV series, The Mandalorian, comes to their streaming site Disney+ this November 12th and will star Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito, and Taika Waititi.

The 2021 scheduled MCU spin-off series, with The Scarlet Witch and Vision, announced more of their cast at D23 event. Teyonah Parris from Dear White People’ joins as a grown-up Monica Rambeau, Kat Dennings returns as Darcy Lewis and Randall Park joins as Agent Jimmy Woo.

A teaser to the show was shown for the fans, but it was distorted with statics, laugh tracks and footage from the Dick Van Dyke Show

Kevin Feige jokingly commented “I’m sure you have a more clear idea of what the show is,” at the reveal of the cast and teaser. 

The shooting of the show hasn’t been announced yet.
