Steven Spielberg Officially Wraps Filming For His ‘West Side Story’ Remake

It’s official, Steven Spielberg and his team at Amblin Entertainment just wrap the filming for the 2020 remake of ‘West Side Story’ on Twitter, along with a few behind-the-scenes pictures. describes the story:

“Based on Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story tells the tale of two star-crossed lovers. Taking place in 1950s New York City, it revolves around a pair of rival gangs, the Sharks and the Jets, who square off for control of their Upper West Side neighborhood. The tension is kicked up a notch when the Jets’ co-founder, Tony, falls in love with Maria, the younger sister to the Sharks’ leader, Bernardo,” writes ScreenRant’s Hannah Hoolihan.

The love story started as a successful 1957 stage musical and progressed to a film version in 1961, which won 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor and Actress for George Chakiris and Rita Moreno, respectively.

Director Steven Speilberg has wanted to remake the story for years, but it officially kicked off last year with the sending out of multiple open casting calls, and at the beginning of this year it was announced that actor Ansel Elgort was cast as Tony and high schooler Rachel Zegler as Maria. Even Rita Moreno from the original ‘West Side Story’ returns.

The filming started earlier this year and officially wrapped October 2th with a statement from Speilberg, where he describes the journey.

“[…] a joyful, stunningly moving, endlessly surprising encounter with the story and score of one of the world’s greatest musicals,” writes director Spielberg in his statement.

The only fans can do now is enjoy the small sneak peeks on Twitter and wait for a trailer in the upcoming months.

Steven Speilberg’s ‘West Side Story’ will have its premiere on December 18th, 2020.
