Director Baz Luhrmann has just cast actress Olivia DeJonge as the film’s Priscilla Presley.
The young Australian actress will play the music legend’s wife. Elvis himself will be portrayed by actor Austin Butler, while Tom Hanks will star as Presley’s manager, Col. Tom Parker.
Thewrap.com describes Elvis and Priscilla’s history together:
“Elvis met 14-year-old Priscilla Wagner at a party in the late ’50s, during his time in the U.S. Army. She later moved into the star’s Graceland compound in 1963 before the couple married in 1967. They had a daughter, Lisa Marie, the following year, and eventually divorced in 1973,” writes The Wrap’s Sean Burch.
DeJonge, who now has been chosen, some of her’s biggest acting-credits include starring in Netflix‘s The Society, and The Visit by M. Night Shyamalan.
“Olivia is capable of manifesting the complex depth and presence that has made Priscilla Presley an icon in her own right […] She’s an extremely talented young actor and the perfect counterpoint to Austin’s Elvis,” commented director Luhrmann when asked by the reporting news outlet Deadline.
The upcoming biopic is written by Luhrmann, Craig Pearce, and Sam Bromell. It seems that the plot will focus on Elvis’ relation to the controlling manager, Col. Tom Parker, who helped his rise from the ’50s to the ’70s.
The project is still untitled but Warner Bros. has scheduled the film for an Oct. 1, 2021 premiere.
