Amazon just bought the series rights for the 2016 sci-fi novel by Naomi Alderman.
The author herself, Alderman, will make the screenplays together with a writing team which includes Stacy Osei-Kuffour and Claire Wilson, while Reed Morano will be the director and executive producer, whose most recent work includes The Handmaid’s Tale (2017-).
Empireonline.com describes the essences of the novel:
“[…] a modern dystopia asking one simple, electric question: what if women could shoot lightning from their fingertips? Of course, it’s more complicated than that (with great power… you know the rest), and so unfolds a militant story of uprising and terrifying gender dynamics born out of chaos,” writes Empire’s Ella Kemp.
It seems that the eventual show will follow a group of different characters, with contrasting positions and nationalites, whereof one role is already cast by actress Leslie Mann, from Blockers and This is 40 fame. She will play the unpredictable mayor of Seattle, Margot Cleary-Lopez.
The filming- and release dates have yet to be announced, but it appears that the project continues to move forward.
