Famous toy company Mattel is working on a new live-action Barney film.
The famous purple Tyrannosaurus-Rex doll with his green spots and belly had a kids show called Barney & Friends that aired on TV from 1992 to 2009, with re-runs after that. Sheryl Leach is the creator behind Barney, and it was rumored in 2017 that Mattel wanted to re-start the show, but nothing got officially announced.
Already have this new eventual film attracted a big star, having actor Daniel Kaluuya from Get Out (2017) and Black Panther (2018) fame on board as a producer. He will do it through his 59% production company.
Kaluuya describes his motivation behind the decision:
“Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood […] We’re excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of ‘I love you, you love me’ can stand the test of time,” said Kaluuya.
Not so much more has been made public yet but it is also known that David Carrico is also producing through his Valparaiso Pictures.
Robbie Brenner from Mattel Films describes his view on the project:
“Working with Daniel Kaluuya will enable us to take a completely new approach to Barney that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations.” said Brenner.
