Kornél Mundruczó, a Hungarian filmmaker, has been selected by Straight Up Films and Phoenix Pictures, direct the story about Joseph Merrick. Also known as The Elephant Man.

The story is set to have the narrative of Joseph and female caretaker at Fawsley Hall Estate. The Elephant Man was slightly a popular stage play from the 1970s by Bernard Pomerance.  In the stage play, Bradley Cooper played the title character. John Hurt and Antony Hopkins starred as well in the David Lynch-directed film version, that got many Oscar nominations.

“The story of Joseph Merrick is one of enduring inspiration. Kornel has a very fresh take that we all feel will bring compassion, dignity, and a new cinematic life to one of history’s most fascinating figures” said Medavoy.

Kate Cohen and Marisa Polvino will produce this remake for Straight Up Films.  Mike Medavoy and David Dobkin will as well produce, for Phoenix Pictures. The Duo has previously produced movies like  The Man from U.N.C.L.E., King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.

“I’ve been attracted to the character of Joseph Merrick’s for a long time,” Mundruczo said, “Our film will pay tribute to this astonishing man whose short life was filled with extraordinary experiences and challenges, that audiences all over the world will relate to deeply. In nature, all creatures thrive and in this environment, the Elephant Man can finally become Joseph Merrick, his true self.”

The production is expected to start in June 2020.
