Seth Rogen’s An American Pickle has found a home at HBO Max.

WarnerMedia’s HBO Max has acquired the film An American Pickle from Sony Pictures, starring Seth Rogen. Sony Pictures had planned to release the film later this year, but that was before the Covid-19 exposed the world and put the global economy and the Entertainment industry on a different path.

“HBO Max is in the market for motion pictures that stand out,” said HBO Max CCO Kevin Reilly in a statement. “And An American Pickle does stand out, with Seth in this wonderfully original, funny, and heartfelt film that we look forward to debuting this summer.”

For HBO Max and the producers from Point Grey’s Seth Rogen, James Weaver, and Evan Goldberg, it’s a win-win. The producers get the film released and HBO Max gets a comedy that stands out.

The official logline says:

A struggling laborer who immigrates to America in 1920 with dreams of building a better life for his beloved family. One day, while working at his factory job, he falls into a vat of pickles and is brined for 100 years. The brine preserves him perfectly and when he emerges in present day Brooklyn, he finds that he hasn’t aged a day. But when he seeks out his family, he is troubled to learn that his only surviving relative is his great grandson, Ben Greenbaum (also played by Rogen), a mild-mannered computer coder whom Herschel can’t even begin to understand.

The film itself is based on Sell Out (2013), written by Simon Rich, directed by Brandon Trost. Trost was also the cinematographer This is the End, Neighbours, and The Interview. Simon Rich wrote his own script and the film is executive produced by Alex McAtee and Ted Gidlow, from Point Grey.  The film itself is set to debut in August this year.
