Introduction

WHAT DEFINES A really good film? Is it the story, the character or how it’s directed? Maybe it’s just because of the genre, the audience has certain preconception. These days you may never know what opinion you will get before you see the movie itself. Cause you’ll need to be able to watch before making an opinion but that is rather untruth considering the reviews of a blockbuster or an anticipated movie is released before the big international premiere. The thing is to make your own beliefs about a movie before it you can take a stand to the critics.

But then there are some fans or a particular audience who actually needs to know about someone else opinion. Other movie lovers read the critics reviews, watches the movie and may or may not agree with the reviewer. Still, for me – the whole thing about watching a movie is about the experience. It’s how the movie makes you feel afterwards. That’s increases you to something special just after you sit in the cinema in a comfortable chair. Whatever that’s around you during the screening, affects you.

Now when the Internet it’s a common thing to find out what kind of rating a specific movie gets. In some way, it does affect what you might think of a movie. Highly anticipated movies, mostly comic-book movies might just drive me mad since the covering for the movie is insane.

The bigger the fan-base there is, the larger and more pressure the movie gets when it premieres. And that isn’t always a good thing considering a lot of fans might get disappointed when it doesn’t live up to such expectations. In a way, everyone is capable to relate to movies, either you want to see to feel satisfied or you just want to see if your expectations were met. Then there’s a group of people in the audience that’s is going to analyze the movie from a technical and a storytelling perspective. These movie viewers, just like me, someone who enjoys movies from a deeper dimension.

Most movies don’t have the capacity to satisfy the whole group of the audience, but then again… Who is the movie produced for? The movie critics from the international movie magazines or the audience, which actually takes their times to watch the movie?

Then there is an issue of budgets and motivation depending on what kind of genre the movie is requested for. Movies should be made to be entertaining, the audience walks out of the cinema with the same premise as the filmmaker and not just to earn money on the box – office. Movies needs, of course, get the money from the box office but that shouldn’t be the prime reason on why they’re producing the movie since the audience is the main target.

Part One: How It All Started

ONE OF THE simple fact you’ve got to learn in the movie industry is that you need to deal with the critics, that is given to you, to survive and to have a career. This industry is a complement to everything in our daily life and something needs to be redeemed in no time, to be able to archive something meaningful.

The thing is that you’re going to be disapproved and almost beaten to death if you can’t follow a deadline or an order from your supervisor. This is known fact, and something most movie makers know and tries to live up. And maybe that is why there are so many divorces that happen in USA and Hollywood. What you achieve during your career, no matter what day, you will be followed and the media would comment on what you do and how you do it.

One of the most disturbing things about the entertainment industry is that remains dependent with the media like the news channels, the newspaper and mostly the social media which now these days is a living thing that no one can leave without. Barely ten years ago, these things didn’t exist and people had to care about what celebrities do and don’t do. How does it matter what our celebrities had for lunch and what they do in the bedroom? How has social media and the daily papers been overtaken of our lives? Is it important to know these things?

Maybe, but these celebrities share too much of the daily life when the most important things and interesting information we could handle lies in the movie industry. Many celebrities are famous for a role they did, then they publish irrelevant posts that is ain’t relevant to what they do for a living. The social media – network is here to gather the families and friends, and it has gone corrupted. Corrupted mostly because it has no limit. People don’t know where how to stop it. Then… on the other hand, they’re so much other information you could find online, that would be able in books or informative films.

Social Media is necessary but maybe not to share information and news on the latest movie trailer, even though this is a very effective system to influence the target reader. This is a system Hollywood know, and something they take advantage for. This is something they monitor cause the big film production studios know what kind of effect it has on their fans and how much it means for them. These studios in Hollywood use Social Media to effect and develop a relationship with their common fans, as a platform to share and market their productions.

As it’s useful for the Hollywood with billions of dollar to use for marketing research, today Independent’s filmmaker would never be able to reach the same level as a Hollywood Studio, even though it’s now a common thing, since Independent doesn’t have the same opportunities with budget and target groups. These major six studios enhanced by consists of Warner Bros. Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Universal, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Walt Disney Studios. All of these studios have been there to build up our movie industry in one way or the other.

THE MAJOR STUDIOS

Warner Bros Pictures

The Warner Brothers of three – Harry, Sam and Albert opened their first theatre that they named to Cascade Movie Palace, located in New Castle, Pennsylvania. This is an early milestone of The Warner’s film empire that started 1906-1907.  Just two years later the brothers sold the theatre, moved to Pittsburgh where Warners started their own film business and sixteen later the Warner Bros. Pictures was recognized and established. Even though the production company got established, Warner Bros. wasn’t founded until April 4th 1923 as a movie company. It took the Warner Brother to produce a movie and that didn’t premiere until 1927 when The Jazz Singer (1927) arrived at the cinema. It was a tremendous and a new movie since it has audio footage instead of being a silent movie.

Paramount Pictures

Paramount Pictures was founded in the USA, Los Angeles to release the films of Jesse Lasky and Adolph Zukor’s Famous Players Film Company. Thereafter the film company expanded to become the first successful nation-wide distributor. Founded in Boston, Massachusetts, and named The Technicolor Motion Picture Corporation, this corporation developed a colour film process best known for Technicolor that gave these movies a certain look, became regularly 1920 in Hollywood films and continued for decades.

Walt Disney Studios

The first produced feature-length animation, a documentary – The Einstein Theory of Relativity (1923), by the Fleischer Brothers Dave and Max. Not many know that the animator Walt Disney directed his first cartoon for Laugh-o-Gram Films, as a 12 minutes short Alice’s Wonderland (aka Alice in Slumberland) (1923) which was Disney’s first unfinished pilot film.

This kind of combination with live-action was due to legal complication, never released before in theatre. These comedies with Alice of the mid of 1920s were a major step in Disney’s career. Up to fifty-six Alice Comedies were produced between 1924 to 1927. The first Alice comedy short – was officially released as Alice’s Day at Seas (1924) on March 1, 1924 – produced from Disney’s “studio” garage in Hollywood. Theatre started to show double features the same year for the first time.
