The Jesus Rolls (2019)
Title: The Jesus Rolls
Genre: Comedy | Crime| Drama |
Runtime: 85 min
Director: John Turturro
Starring: John Turturro, Bobby Cannavale, Audrey Tautou
John Turturro plays Jesus Quintana in ‘Going Places,’ a film about a trio of misfits whose irreverent, sexually charged dynamic evolves into a surprising love story as their spontaneous and flippant attitude towards the past or future backfires time and again, even as they inadvertently perform good deeds. When they make enemies with a gun-toting hairdresser, their journey becomes one of constant escape from the law, from society and from the hairdresser, all while the bonds of their outsider family strengthen.
SEX, PROFANITIES AND MISFITS
Well, as The Jesus Roll tries to keep a boring character as Jesus alive and lives on old merits from The Big Lebowski. The character Jesus is the only that has kept from the original film and that film wasn’t even impressive either. With the concept of “road movie”, the film is always on the road as you could expect. And with that, comes complications, because here you don’t have a real story. There is no conflict, no progress in the story except for a girl that has several orgasms at the end of the film.
By the end, you’ll have more stupid questions instead of answers. all that happens within the plot is just mere distraction from what matters. And what that has not defined in the film. There are so many loose threads that there is no wonder that this film had become a failure. It didn’t really need to connect with the film by The Coen Brothers. It doesn’t give that impact either.
John Turturro gives an annoying performance of this somewhat eccentric character that Jesus is. Bobby is decent as the sidekick but the real actor one that doesn’t give bad eyesight is actually Audrey. She manages to capture the horrible life her character Marie experience during the time of the film. She is probably the only thing that keeps this wreckage afloat.
John did also the writing and directing for the film besides acting. He did not do a good enough job. A lot of things in this film is out of the place. The cameos are unnecessary, the sex-concept of the film is over the top. Well, it’s a little too much. Slightly overwhelming with the fucking, the threesomes, the sexual harassment.
And don’t forget that this is actually a film from 2017, not two laters. It’s a dismissed film and you wouldn’t lose anything if you see this remake of Les valseuses. It’s a disgrace of a film and not worth spending your time on it, even if manage to keep the attention high. But don’t get lost in that, it’s a waste of effort for that. Again, why was this piece of shit even produced?
