Black Widow (2020) is expected to launch the long-awaited continuation fourth phase of MCU, starring Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh among the cast as soon it’s allowed due to the pandemic.

Speaking to Empire, director Cate Shortland of Black Widow has said that Florence Pugh’s character Yelena will take over after Natasha Romanoff.

”[Kevin Feige] realized that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction, ”Shortland said. ”And we didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn’t know how great. Scarlett is so gracious, like, ’Oh, I’m handing her baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline.” Shortland continued.

Bare, in mind, that this film takes place between Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018)  so necessary this doesn’t mean that Yelena will be the new Black Widow for the MCU. Natasha died in Avengers: Endgame (2019).

And as it has been mentioned in some of the media, is that Black Widow is just an operative code name for someone, and Yelena was already activated as one before the film started. But there’s still a possibility that Florence Pugh’s Yelena is taking over after her sister.
