One of the executive producers who left the series after the fourth season, Clyde Philips joined a podcast of where he confirmed the return of Dexter Morgan.

“We basically do get to start from scratch — we want this to ot be Dexter Season 9.  Ten years, or however many years, have passed by the time this will air, and the show will reflect that time passage. So far as the ending of the show, this will have no resemblance to how the original finale was. It’s a great opportunity to write a second finale.”

The finale season, the eighth season, was a failure and was blamed by the audience for its horrible writing and ending, which the producers seem to be very aware of.

“This is an opportunity to make that right,” Phillips said. “But that’s not why we’re doing it.”

“We’re not undoing anything — we’re not going to betray the audience and say, ‘Whoops, that was all a dream.’ What happened in the first eight years happened in the first eight years.”

And Showtime own Twitter confirms this as well. The series will be a limited one with Michael C. Hall returning and 10 episodes.

The new series is expected to return in fall 2021, with production start late 2020.
