The TV-adaption of the best-selling horror-game The Last of Us, is getting greenlight on HBO.
It has been known since march this year that Craig Mazin would write the series but the series was in development-hiatus since then. Until now. Mazin writer/showrunner for Chernobyl (2019) is writing the script with Neil Druckmann. Druckmann is the game writer and creative director. The series ill be produced by HBO and Sony Pictures TV together with Playstation Productions, Word Games and gaming developer Naughty Dog.
“Craig and Neil are visionaries in a league of their own,” said HBO Programming executive vp Francesca Orsi. “With them at the helm alongside the incomparable Carolyn Strauss, this series is sure to resonate with both die-hard fans of The Last of Us games and newcomers to this genre-defining saga. We’re delighted to partner with Naughty Dog, Word Games, Sony and PlayStation to adapt this epic, powerfully immersive story.”
The game follows teenager Ellie through a post-apocalyptic America with a help of a stranger, Joel, to survive who’s hired to smuggle her out. The TV-series will cover the plot for the first game. Johan Renck was hired to direct the pilot but dropped out.
“We’re thrilled to be working with HBO and this fantastic creative team to bring The Last of Us series to life,” said Sony Pictures TV Studios president Jeff Frost and PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash in a statement. “PlayStation’s innovative storytelling and ingenuity is a natural complement to SPT’s creative focus. Our collaboration is a great example of our ‘One Sony’ philosophy at work. We look forward to developing even more iconic game IP in the future.”
The series will be executive produced by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann together with Carolyn Strauss, who produced Chernobyl and Game of Thrones. Evan Wells from Naugty Dog will produce as well as PlayStation Productions Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan. Both the game the series is based on has been hugely popular. Chernobyl was one of the best critical-acclaimed series released last year.
