Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical film has cast a younger Spielberg in a key role.
Sam Rechner will be playing a high-school filmmaking student in Spielberg’s upcoming film. Rechner is only 19 and will be joining a cast of Seth Rogen, Michelle Williams, and Paul Dano. Julia Butters and Gabriel LaBelle, from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are also joining the ensemble. Williams will play a loosely based character of the director’s mother and Dano will play Steven’s father and Roger to play the favorite uncle. Rechner has appeared in Ruby Choice and The Wilds.
This untitled film is partly based on the famous directors’ own childhood growing up in Arizona, following his early life. At age 12 he made his first home movie, leading to a directing career. The principal photography of the film kicks off at the beginning of July with a release in 2022. The script is written by Spielberg together with collaborator Tony Kunscher. Producing the film are Spielberg, Kushner, and Kristie Macosko Krieger.
