Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Entertainment have together with Denis Villeneuve green-lighted the continuation of the epic that began this year.
Dune based on Frank Herbert’s mastodont story, returns October 20, 2023. Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides left an unanswered cliffhanger by the end of the story, leaving things off the plot to unfold. With its money and expansion potential it had, there’s no surprise perhaps that a sequel was green-lighted close to the U.S premiere.
“I wanted at the beginning to do the two parts simultaneously. For several reasons, it didn’t happen, and I agreed to the challenge of making part one and then wait to see if the movie rings enough enthusiasm… As I was doing the first part, I really put all my passion into it, in case it would be the only one. But I’m optimistic.”
Executive Ann Sarnoff has also hinted that a sequel was a go.
“The story in itself sets up for a sequel. The production is so amazing and the storytelling is so compelling that it’s not going to be judged on box office alone,” Sarnoff said.
It was quite an obvious choice that the sequel would be announced any time now. Mostly has been depending on how the result of the films box office has played out in both theatres and HBO Max. Up to date, the blockbuster has been grossed $467.8 million globally.
“We are thrilled to continue on this journey with Denis and his cast and crew, and our partners at Legendary, and can’t wait to bring the next chapter of this epic tale to theatres in October 2023.”
The universe of Dune, at least those Herbert wrote, are massive and detailed. There’s also a series on the way about the sisters, some that Paul meets in this particular film.
