Thirty years after their popular television show ended, chipmunks Chip and Dale live very different lives. When a cast member from the original series mysteriously disappears, the pair must reunite to save their friend.

ONLY WORTH FOR THE NOSTALGIA

It’s obvious that those who needs to watch this film, a story that takes place after the original TV-series, is for those that craves after some nostalgia trip. We get one hand drawn Chip and one ugly CGI-formatted Dale. Why this decision is beyond every aspect. It’s not that it destroys the film. It’s just that’s it’s a fairly annoying thing.

The metafiction plot is the main thing this film is all about. It’s all about the metaplot that tells the story forward.  It has old characters from movies that has been bootlegged into bad films. It mocks all other franchises, spoofs on other series and how Hollywood are rebooting the old successes. Given that, it’s right on point on how it wants the story to be told. Somethings with the meta and the combination of live-action and animation becomes tedious by the end.

Surprisingly, and you got to admit it, the squeaky voices of the chipmunks are iconic with the characters. It’s a trademark also with their looks. But using other actors like Samberg and Mulaney proves that this isn’t the ordinary film. It’s not the chipmunks’ kids of the millennials known to love. The very idea of animated characters to live in an parallell universe, tackling acting jobs and selling boat insurance, is both thrilling as an idea and both terrifying approach as it defines your childhood on something that it’s time to let go. The voice-acting of the leading duo is satisfying good, not all distracting as expected.

On the downside, Ellie played by Kiki Layne, is a odd addition to the whole concept. She doesn’t fit at all in the whole meta-physic world that’s depcited. She can’t act with the animated characters and her interaction is flawed from the first scene. J.K. Simmons voice can be heard and he does even a better job by the end. Layne doesn’t fit mostly because it doesn’t make sense what so ever. Then we have Seth Rogen who is another flawed thing in the film and doesn’t add anything fun or interesting to the thrilling story.
