This show delves into the lives of two men, one trying to survive his terminal illness and the other struggling with a moral dilemma which risks destroying his life and relationships.
So we got another series, with two established actors that do both comedy and drama. Well, Carell likes drama, and it’s the series is proof of that. A therapeutic doctor is kidnapped by his own patient who tries to talk him out of killing people. There are ten episodes. Most of them have a runtime of 25 minutes, some are up to 40 minutes. That has 5 hours of runtime.
The Americans, a completely different series, but also run by these showrunners. That series had a far greater purpose than this single-room drama fixating on the relationship and the skills of psychotherapists., trying to save lives. That the perpetrator’s mother agrees with the prisoner’s situation seems to be weird. What’s interesting about the series is the human analytic approach, to why a human would kill or have the urge to murder someone.
However, Domhnall Gleeson as Sam doesn’t strike as violent or evil. In this series, he never gives in to his emotions. He is easily manipulated, and his urges never come to fruition. It’s frustrating to see a series experimenting with a hypothetical approach of a patient-doctor relationship. It’s frustrating that such a good actor doesn’t achieve the potential of the series. Sure, we get more details about their characters but nothing more is revealed in this mini-series.
Multiple outlets have praised The Patient for its thought-provoking content and brilliant performances by Steve Carell and Domhnall Gleeson. The series has earned a score of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics noting its innovative story structure, moral complexity, and emotionally gripping dynamics between the main characters. In addition, the impeccable timing, clever visuals, and strong dialogue add to the show’s excellence.
The series is not an action series, the main attribute is completely based on screenwriting and dialogue. Thankful the performance from Gleeson and Carell saves the whole series because the writing or the editing don’t sell the series’ thriller approach or premise. Come on, Elias had to die for the story. What’s positive about the series is the short, binge-watchable runtime. It’s short enough to make the episodes far more intriguing and long enough to continue to watch. Overall, it’s a mediocre drama fixating on two characters and the toll of the circumstances.
